Through the Looking Glass

1974       Catharine Burgess

Jonas Middleton's new movie, Through the Looking Glass, is a unique psychological thriller dealing with narcissism and vanity. It explores the life of Catharine Burgess, a beautiful and vain woman who is tempted and tormented by supernatural forces.

Catharine is elegant, rich and refined. To her socialite friends, she appears to have everything: an estate by the sea, obedient servants, a secure marriage and a lovely young daughter. She spends her days in beauty salons and her evenings around chandeliered dining room tables.

In her New England town, Catharine is thought of as a Goddess. However, underneath her composed exterior exists another being, a restless and frustrated female approaching middle age. Catharine is living a double life, posing as a happily married woman yet dreaming of a life of sin. No one around her is aware that these dreams are so powerful, her desires so strong. Late at night she finds herself climbing the stairs to her secret attic room at the top of the house. There, in front of her old

ornate looking glass, Catharine dreams for hours, confirming to herself that she's still beautiful and imagining forbidden lovers.

What do you suppose happens to a woman like this? Anything hidden must be revealed; dreams do come true. Therefore, the more Catharine gazes into her mirror, the more real her hidden self becomes and the less real Catharine becomes. The forbidden evil slowly emerges and we (the audience) realize Catharine Burgess has gone to far ... her dreams are coming true: a satanic Demon has evolved. Through the Looking Glass moves from vivid reality to total fantasy as Catharine becomes her forbidden self and is finally and completely consumed by her Demonic lover.
