The Story of Joanna

1975       Directed by Gerard Damiano

What is better.. . sex that grows out of love or love that grows out of pure sex?
The psychological process of thought works on many levels. The obvious one is that good is good, and evil is evil. But which is which? It used to be as simple as looking for the man in the white hat. Now, who can say?
JOANNA is a bizarre tale of sensual emotion based on the assumption that love in its purest form is selfless.
The time and the places are not important because in the end, it is not how well we live, but how well we die.
Jason (as portrayed by Jamie Gillis)has a preoccupation with death. He encounters a beautiful, young, innocent girl one evening (played by newcomer Tern Hall) and proceeds to take her down through a funnel of despair.
The story unfolds in retrospect as Jason writes a letter to Joanna explaining to her the events that have led her through this maze of sexual deprivation, and degradation.
If we can identify

with Joanna it is perhaps because there is a little bit of her in all of us. We can feel what she feels whether it be the burning sting of the whip, or the sensual abandonment to the physical act of love.
Jason leads Joanna through one sexual encounter after another, each more macabre and degrading than the last. She becomes his willing ploy asking only that she be allowed to love him.
Jason promises Joanna that tonight her lover will come to her, and in the quiet of her bedroom crawl between her legs. Instead of fulfilling his promise, he sends Griffin, (played by Zebedy Colt) his man servant. Together these two pawns reach out to each other, not in love, but in sexual need.. .in a scene that promises to be the most sensual ever portrayed on film.
