Swedish and Under Age

1969

The quiet respectability of a small Swedish town is shattered when several prominent men are accused of adultery and fornication with a minor, Eva (SOLVEIG ANDERSSON), the young girl involved, has skipped school on the day of the discovery to keep an appointment with an elderly handyman who delights in viewing and fondling her body. Later during a 'back-seat' affair with a younger man, Eva first learns that the police are searching for her. She quickly dresses and manages to elude the police for only several hours.

Once in custody Eva acts rather naive' and scatter-brained and during her talk with the police Commissioner she unintentionally betrays all the men involved. One by one, the additional men named by Eva are brought to the police station and while waiting for their turn with the Commissioner they re-live their relationships with the young girl. In each case the men show no outward sign of remorse for their actions. Eva seemed to have sensed the unfilled desire in every man. In spite of her age.

The town is now completely involved in the scandal. Every woman fears that her husband may be the next man to be summoned for questioning. Lennart Svenningsson (HANS WAHLGREN), a young journalist, is upset about the headlines in the newspaper concerning the case. He tells his wife, Maria (SIV MATTSON), that he understood why men turned to Eva and that her compensation for the sexual pleasures she gave the men was not money but friendliness and love.

The Commissioner, although friendly to Eva, is persistent in his questioning. He must determine the identity of the first offender. Eva finally admits that is was the choir-master Bolinder who first seduced her. Bolinder is conducting the church choir on Sunday and after the sermon during a church coffee party, the police arrive and arrest him.

Bounder and the men are brought to trial. The defense attorney introduces a number of witnesses who describe Eva as evil. The female psychiatrist assigned to the case begins to see Eva as a psychological mystery and takes a great personal interest in her.

The trial takes a dramatic turn when Sevenningsson intercedes on behalf of Eva, exposes his own past to show that Eva, as a child, is worthy of far more understanding and guidance than she has received from the community.

The men are found guilty and the court orders that Eva be taken from her foster home for sheltered institutional guidance. The psychiatrist asks for permission to take Eva into her home so that she might begin to lead a normal life.
