Year of the Cannibals
Cannibali, I

1970       Britt Ekland

Corpses lie in the streets of the city, ignored by passersby as they go about their daily affairs. Posters on the walls warn immediate punishment to those who touch or attempt to remove the corpses of these "rebels." A girl, Antigone, (BRITT EKLAND) riding in a subway with her sister, Ismene, (DELIA BOCCARDO) is shocked by the sight and comments on this general indifference. The body of their young brother is one of the corpses and Ismene vainly tries to convince Antigone that they would only be risking their own lives in attenipting to defy the government orders and remove it.

Tiresias, a strange looking young man (PIERRE CLEMENT!) enters a restaurant and speaks to the waiter in a language nobody understands. Antigone who is in the restaurant tries to communicate with him by signs. She hands him a paper napkin and a pencil and the boy draws a fish. The waiter brings him some sole, which he indicates was not what he was trying to communicate to them. But he eats the

fish and leaves without paying his bill. Antigone pays for his meal and, in the street she is followed by the lad to her brother's body. Tiresias helps her place the corpse in a car and they flee into the country with the police at their heels.

Placing her brother's body on the bank of a river,

Antigone and the silent young man return to the city and start collecting more bodies but are apprehended by the police. The boy escapes but Antigone is taken to police headquarters where she pretends to be a deaf mute, communicating only by drawing a fish and infuriating the police who beat her severely.

Antigone's boyfriend, Emone, (TOMAS MILIAN) the son of a prominent colonel, (FRANCESCO LEONETTI) is informed of her problem and he finds her in bandages at the prison. Returning to his home, he argues with his father who forbids him to see Antigone again. He then goes into the street and starts loading corpses and is also arrested. Antigone is questioned by the high government officials but, when she maintains her silence except for handing them the drawing of a fish, they order her to a quick trial and execution. Emone attempts suicide in jail and is sent to an asylum.

Blaming Antigone for his son's derangement, the colonel orders her immediate execution. As she stands handcuffed in the public square, the mute young man who had escaped the police suddenly appears and goes towards her. As she runs toward him to stop him they are both shot dead. The young people start loading the corpses of other rebels on their shoulders. Others soon join them in ever increasing numbers.
