Deep Star Six
aka DeepStar Six

1988       Taurean Blacque

Teaser Storyline for Deep Star Six

The time is the near future. The United States Navy has established a secret undersea laboratory base, DeepStar 6, six miles below the oceans surface. With a crew of eleven, Dr. John Van Gelder (Marius Weyers) is supervising the exploration of undersea colonization. Uric Navy has agreed to finance his pet project on the condition that Van Gelder implement the installation of their deep sea missile base.

Isolated at the bottom of the ocean, Van Gelder and his team of scientists are close to completing their assignments. Due to cost overruns and security precautions, the Navy is pressuring them to complete installation procedures immediately.

Tempers are running short and the tension is running high as the crew is anxious to go topside after six months of being confined in these claustrophobic conditions. During the last phase of implementation, the crew discovers a huge cavern, located on the ocean floor. Fearing the Navy will shut down his research operation if there are any delays, Van Gelder

orders the excavation crew to explode the cavern. He must provide a solid foundation for the launch site.

Moments after the explosion, the command center is violently attacked and communication with the excavation crew goes dead. With structural damage increasing and oxygen supply decreasing, time is running out to safely go topside. Unexpectedly, the remaining crew members make a startling discovery : not all aliens come from space.

Production Notes for Deep Star Six

After eight months of research and pre-production, principal photography on DEEPSTAR SIX began on March 23, 1988 and wrapped 55 days later on June 10, 1988. The project was brought to Sean Cunningnam in August of 1987. Always interested in the ocean, he knew he had a large challenge ahead of him. "When I first read the script, I knew that this would be an enormously complicated, technical production," explains Cunningham. 'This kind of film is the first of it's kind -- creating a universe which is six miles below the ocean's surface.

"Imagine that you are trapped and can't get out of this claustrophobic area with water leaking everywhere," says Cunningham. 'Add to that a monstrous creature who finds his way into this confined area with eleven crew members' lives at stake, and you have a very scary life threatening situation."

Cunningham brought producer Patrick Markey on immediately, having worked together on "House I.' They hired production designer John Reinhart and Visual Effects Supervisor Jim Isaac to start the research process. The challenges that the creative team had to overcome included the difficulties of working under water, the special effects and creating the enormous creature within confined sets.

"We did a lot of intense research of the sets and the creature. We wanted to convey that these characters exist in a very contained, claustrophobic environment on the bottom of the ocean," comments producer Markey. "And when these people come into contact with the creature, their fear of drowning and suffocating becomes a universal experience."

Investigating underwater life, the creative team spent months going through hooks, films and documents from the Smithsonian and Scripps Institutes
