Deadly Blessing

1983       Sharon Stone

PolyGram Pictures' presentation Deadly Blessing is a psychological thriller starring Maren Jensen, Susan Buckner, Sharon Stone, Jeff East, Lisa Hartman, Lois Nettleton and Ernest Borgnine.

An Inter Planetary Production of a Wes Craven Film, it was produced by Micheline and Max Keller and Pat Herskovic. Craven directed from a screenplay by Glenn M. Benest & Matthew Barr and Craven from a story by Benest & Barr. The executive producer was William Gilmore, and Jere Henshaw was the executive in charge of production. The film is released by United Artists. Music was composed by James Homer.

Focusing on the fears of psychological terror, Deadly Blessing is the story of a young woman who marries a member of a strange religious sect and then is pursued by unknown forces after he is murdered.

Director and co-author Craven describes the film as "an exploration of the different sides of people in peril, caught up in frightening circumstances brought about by psychotic emotions and bizarre religious experiences that result when one encounters an exotic and

life-threatening cult."

The story centers, in part, around a fictitious ieligious cult, the Hittites, a name taken from a pagan biblical tribe. They seek to repress other people's faiths and lifestyles. The Hittites also strive to prevent the "outside world" from influencing their own living pattern, and take stern measures to uphold their own beliefs.

Deadly Blessing was filmed on a wide variety of Texas locations, in and around Dallas and the town of Waxahachie (hometown of Oscar winner Robert Benton, "Kramer Vs. Kramer" and UA's "Stab"). One of the principal sites was an 80-acre farm on which much of the action takes place. Naturally, the construction crew decided to rebuild and "age" an old barn for greater visual and dramatic effect. As for the farm house, it received a major facelift with the addition of a white picket fence, shutters around the front windows and a new porch area complete with swing. Even the yard was worked over with special landscaping and a vegetable garden.
