The Night Porter
Portiere di notte, Il

1974       Charlotte Rampling

Teaser Storyline for The Night Porter

The place is Vienna. The time is 1957.

Max (DIRK BOGARDE), a former SS officer, now lives under the anonymous cloak of night hail porter in a Vienna hotel.

Max's former companions, all of whom now hold positions of importance in local political and professional activities, have come to grips with their own mild guilt complexes by organizing themselves into a sort of therapy group. The group in fact serve another far more practical purpose.

Any dangerous witnesses turned up during therapy sessions are summarily murdered, or are virtually buried alive, confined for life in the padded cells of a clinic for the mentally ill, owned and operated by Hans (GABRIELE FERZETTI), former camp commandant.

A few days before Max's own session a new guest and her American husband check into the hotel. She is Lucia (CHARLOTTE RAMPLING), who was Max's teenaged mistress and torture toy in the camp.

Now the wife of an on-tour American orchestra conductor, Atherton (MARINO MASE),

the two have returned to Lucia's native Vienna where Atherton is to conduct a performance at the nearby Opera House.

The meeting between Lucia and Max is terrifying for both of them. As they face one another across Max's desk, the scenes of their sado-masochistic relationship flash through their minds and it is almost as though the years in between had never existed.

Atherton seems not to know or care more than superficially about his wife's past. He fails to recognize his wife's sudden distress and inner turmoil. Shortly after the opera performance, he flies off to Frankfort to continue his concert tour, leaving Lucia alone in Vienna.

Terrified but fascinated, obsessed by nightmarish memories of the camp and her sado-masochistic relationship with Max, Lucia shrinks from denouncing her former torturer-lover, and, inevitably, succumbs to him anew.

Certain of Lucia's fate if his comrades discover she is still alive, Max flatly refuses to cooperate with them.

To circumvent discovery, Lucia moves into Max's apartment on the outskirts of the city. But Max's former friends, suspicious of his behavior, have him spied on.

Successfully detouring police efforts to locate Lucia, whose unexplained disappearance has been reported to the authorities by her husband, the ex-SS men lay siege to Max's apartment.

When Max refuses to surrender, his former comrades try to kill him, sniping at him with a silenced pistol when he steps briefly onto his small balcony.

Their food gone, not daring to risk contact with the outside world, hope fading fast, Max and Lucia-now inmates in a new sort of concentration camp, slip into lethargy and despair.

Having starved and terrified Max and Lucia for weeks, Max's former companions cut off the water and electricity.- Realizing their situation is as hopeless and their end as inevitable as was that of any concentration camp inmate fifteen years earlier, Max and Lucia accept the fact of death.

It is night and the streets of Vienna are deserted. Half carrying Lucia, Max slips out of the building, gets into his car and drives away. Almost immediately the couple are followed by another car . . . .
