Circle of Love

1964       Jane Fonda

Teaser Storyline for Circle of Love

IN A PARIS KNOWN FOR ITS PERENNIAL GAIETY, the eve of World War I released an exuberance never before experienced in that Queen of Cities, and all the aspects of its love for love became intensified.

A sentimental prostitute (MARIE DUBOIS) indulges herself in a free and fleeting escapade with a handsome soldier (CLAUDE GIRAUD) because of his resemblance to her one true love. In his compression of love while it is still available to him, the soldier first overwhelms a lonely housemaid (ANNA KARINA) at a dance with his charms and then immediately forsakes her to pursue another attractive girl. Despondent over the experience, she allows herself to be seduced by the son (JEAN-CLAUDE BRIALY) of the family for whom she works. Encouraged by his conquest, he concentrates on consummating an affair with a young and bored housewife (JANE FONDA). Refreshed by the experience, the wife makes bold overtures to her stuffy husband (MAURICE RONET) which both shocks and gratifies him at the same time.

In his subsequent affair with a young girl (CATHERINE SPAAK) whom he picks up, his approach is anything but stuffy. While living as his newly set-up mistress, she disregards his admonishments of not talking to strange men and finds her own pleasures with a playwright whose casting couch is a promissory launching pad for a brilliant career on the stage. He is diverted from her by the famous actress (FRANCINE BERG) with whom he had shared their early days of ecstatic love. The ecstasy is gone for her with the sad realization that only young men like the Count (JEAN SOREL) can now fulfill her jaded expectations ...

Jane Fonda stars in Circle of Love

JANE FONDA HAS BEEN GIVEN DIRECTOR ROGER VADIM'S SPECIAL TOUCH in Circle of Love the EastmanColor picture. For her role as a restless young wife, Miss Fonda is exquisitely dressed and undressed in the best of Parisian fashion.

Miss Fonda achieved tremendous popularity in France when she arrived there to make her first motion picture for famed director Rene Cement. Although she had previously studied painting and languages in Paris while completing her education, her presence at the time did not cause any undue notice. However, the grown-up Fonda was a far cry from the school girl miss, and with her piquant beauty and long tapering legs, she soon attracted lensmen which resulted in her dominating the front pages of magazines throughout the European continent. When Miss Fonda started filming Circle of Love Vadim's talent of transforming girls into women soon became apparent and she was launched on another round with the photographers who found the "new" image all the more exciting.

Circle of Love was adapted for the screen by Jean Anouilh from Arthur Schnitzler's stage play "Reigen." The distinguished playwright has brought his own point of view and wit in developing the theme of love and its constant renewal. The setting has been changed from turn of the century Vienna to Paris on the eve of World War I when that city, as if sensing the impending holocaust to come, was pleasure bound as never before.

Anna Karma, Marie Dubois, Catherine Spaak and Francine Berg are the other leading charmers who are pursued by Jean-Claude Brialy, Jean Sorel, Claude Giraud, Bernard Noel and Maurice Ronet in Circle of Love The Walter Reade-Sterling release is a Robert and Haymond production.
